So I turned to the Lord, my heart heavy with sorrow,
and I cried out from the depths of my soul:
“Lord, you made a promise —
that if I walked with You, if I gave You my trust,
You would never leave me, not for a single moment.
But I have looked back on the path of my life,
and I’ve seen the places where the shadows fell longest,
the seasons when grief wrapped itself around me like a cloak.
And in those moments,
those times when the weight was more than I could bear,
there were only one set of footprints in the sand.
Not two. Only one.
Tell me, Lord…
where were You then?
Why, when I needed You most —
when I was broken, weary, lost —
did You not walk beside me?”
Idea and concept crafted by Hamid Attig,
inspired by Mary Stevenson’s (1896–1985) poem "Footprints in the Sand."
